What is Work Related Learning?
“Planned activity that uses the context of work to develop knowledge, skills and understanding that will be useful in work”.
Work related learning at The Eltham Foundation School focuses on getting students to:
- Learn Through Work
- Learn About Work
- Learn For Work
Students from year 7-11 will participate in a range of activities, covering the areas of Work Related Learning and Enterprise. They will cover topics such as Money Management, C.V writing workshops, Volunteering, Work Experience and how to be enterprising.
All year 7 students will have the opportunity of taking part in the Thames Architectural Trail trip. This trip is run in conjunction with our Opening Minds department. It gives students an insight in to architecture, where people work and what type of job opportunities are available in and around central London. The climax of the trip is a flight for all of the students on the London Eye.
All Year 9 students will choose options, which they will begin studying at the start of year 10. There are a large number of in school and vocational (work based) options available to all year 9 students.
All year 10 students take part in the schools 2 week work experience programme. This enables students to experience the world of work first hand. They will learn new skills such as time management, interaction with other people and presentation skills.
All students within the school have access to a Connexions Personal Adviser. Connexions are available to help students particularly when making important decisions such as choosing options or applying to colleges. We have a dedicated careers library within the school, which is stocked with books and information which is available to all students.
Year 11 students are offered one to one interviews with Connexions Personal Adviser in order for them to make decisions about applying to colleges. We can offer assistance with completing application forms and preparing a C.V or covering letter. A member of Connexions staff will always be available at all parent’s evenings and on GCSE results day. There is also a Connexions service available during school holidays.
The school hosts an annual Community Careers Fair which takes place each September. It is specifically aimed at year 10 & 11 students and members of the local community looking to enter in to further education or employment.
The Eltham Foundation School were recently assessed and awarded a Silver award for Work Related Learning within the school.
