The Design and Technology Department would like to invite you to ‘ Textile Club’. This will take place every Wednesday from 3pm to 4pm in S4. You will learn different textile decoration techniques and you will be introduced to a variety of creative ways of how to make different products such as: accessories, hair pieces, make up bags and many more. You will also have the chance to develop the felt making process and how to apply this technique to make different products.
Starting: Wednesday 11th January 2012
We are looking forward to see you there!
Technology
In design and technology pupils use a combination of practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and manufacture products that are useful and satisfy the user’s need. Our department offers a range of disciplines that pupil’s have the opportunity to study; Resistant Material, Product Design, Textiles and Food Technology.
The main aim of the design and technology staff is to provide pupils the opportunity to:
develop the ability to generate, develop, model and communicate ideas in various ways be creative in when responding to design briefs, developing their own proposals and specification
develop their capability through combining their knowledge and understanding of various materials, ingredients and technologies to design and product realization
- develop their understanding of existing designs to inform their own
- develop the ability assess which hand and machine tools, equipment and CAD/CAM facilities are most suitable to use to solve technical problems
- gain understanding of key concepts of designing and making, cultural, creativity and critical evaluation
Design &Technology at KS3 & KS4
In design and technology pupils progress and bring into use knowledge and understanding of:
- tools, resources and technological processes
- history, evolution of technology
- impacts of technology
- branding and marketing
- existing products
- materials and components including joining and combining
- processes and recognising new materials and processes, and identifying their potential uses
- mechanisms and control systems
- new technologies and new technological applications, including,computer-aided design and manufacture (CAD/CAM);
- single and quantity production techniques, including those
- focusing on quality assurance
- health, hygiene and safety
- the impact of products to the environment

KS3
In Year 7 and 8 students have the opportunity to study all the areas of Design & Technology.
Some of the projects that they will do are:
Year 7
Resistant Materials
Mechanical Toy Project – students will be introduced to the workshop and start to develop an understanding of woods and how to shape and finish woods using a range of tools and surface finishes.
Product Design
Fast Food Packaging Project – students be introduced to the world of branding and packaging in which they will create their own fast food company and create their own brand identity for it.
Textiles
Puppet Project – students will start to explore the world of textiles. They will learning develop an understanding of fabrics and surface decoration techniques.
Food Technology
Intro to the Kitchen – students will be develop their kitchen skills and develop an understanding of healthy eating. They will also look at the branding and packaging side of marketing food to different target markets. They will also design and make their own food products.
Year 8
Resistant Materials
Night Ligtt Project – students will be introduced to the world of electronics and wood work. Students will construct a night light frame out of wood and make the aesthetic detailing using the laser cutter out of acrylic.
Product Design
T-Shirt Graphic Project – students will learn out the photo manipulation and the social affects linked with this. They will learn how to use Adobe Photoshop which is used in the design industry. They create a graphic for a t-shirt graphic which they will then apply to a t-shirt.
Textiles
Fashion Label Project – students will be introduced to the garment industry and understand and skills in pattern cutting and advanced surface decoration techniques. This will help them to create their own garment.
Year 9
Students in Year 9 have the opportunity to decide which areas of Design & Technology they would like to study for the whole year. Students have the option of choosing from the following;
Resistant Materials
This specialism focuses on using more traditional manufacturing techniques. In this area we work with woods, metals and plastics and create all products by hand using traditional tools such as saws, sanders and drills. The product students will design and make; clock, body adornment and children’s toy.
Product Design
This specialism focuses on new technologies to create popular products such as iPhones and Smart Cars. In this specialism using ICT is a must and is used heavily to make the final product. In the first term they will make an MP3 docking station which they will design and make using the laser cutter.
Textiles
This specialism focuses on the garment (clothing) industry, working with a range of fabrics and experimenting with different surface decoration techniques. In the first term students will undertake a mixed media project in which they will create a garment made from recycled objects/ materials.
Food Technology
This specialism focus on designing with food. In this area you will develop kitchen skills and knowledge of nutrition and healthy eating. Students will design and make their own recipes and start understanding the concept of food science.
KS4
We have expanded the range of GSCEs we offer students. Students can now choose from the following options;
Resistant Materials
Product Design
Textiles
Hospitality and Catering
