Dear Parent/Guardian,

RE: Independent Learning

With effect from June 2011 homework at The Eltham Foundation School will be re-named Independent Learning. Parents, students and staff were all involved in the development of the new policy, and we hope that with your support, it will have a successful impact on your child’s academic progress.

A summary of the main points of the new policy is outlined below:

  •  Independent Learning will prepare students for their half-termly assessments.
  •  All Independent Learning written work is to be completed in your child’s subject exercise book unless stated otherwise, which must then be brought in to school for class discussion, assessment or class/peer/teacher marking.
  •  All Independent Learning for every subject will be posted on the school website every two weeks, with a two week deadline for completion. On the school website, click on the ‘Independent Learning Assignments’ link in the ‘Quick Links’ section on the right hand side of the home page.
  •  For Year 7 and 8 students, the recommended total of Independent learning per week is 6 to 8 hours. For students in Years 9, 10 and 11, this amount is 8 to 10 hours per week.
  •  Every half term your child will be awarded a level or grade for every subject. Research shows that the more Independent Learning completed, the better the progress towards their target grade or level. Details of your child’s levels and grades will be posted home to all parents every term.

The following measures will be put in place to assist all students with their homework and to develop their Independent Learning skills. Please encourage your child to attend the sessions after school:

  • Independent learning support session will be offered, providing a quiet and supportive environment for students to complete their independent learning.
  •  Attendance is optional (although attendance will be monitored). The learning completed will count towards the recommended six to eight hours Independent Learning per week.
  •  Independent Learning support sessions will take place from 2.50-3.50pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays (see enclosed timetable)
  •  At these sessions, computers, printers and internet access is available should your child not have access at home
  • The uniform and behaviour policy will have to be adhered to during Independent Learning sessions.
  • A teacher and/or a member of support staff will be supervising the session. They will be able to help students with their Independent Learning but will not be teaching a new lesson.
  •  Students are also encouraged to engage with their learning by researching further areas of interest, or studying areas of difficulty.

Please encourage your child by talking to them about Independent Learning and monitoring the quality of work completed.
