What is MFL?
MFL gives our pupils the opportunity to study French and Spanish and learn more about the world beyond South East London! It is an exciting subject in which pupils explore foreign language, culture, food, music and traditions to name but a few. MFL encourages communication skills and is increasingly important in the worldwide employment market.
MFL Curriculum
Year 7
- Introduction to languages, French and Spanish carousel. Students study both languages in year 7 and then choose one going into year 8. Topics include: Introductions, family, personal description. School life, free time activities and sports. At home and on holiday.
Year 8
- Daily routine and life Family and friends Eating and shopping Getting to know France/Spain
Year 9
- Geography of France/Spain Healthy living and eating Visiting France/Spain Fitness/sport
Year 10 & 11 (EDEXCEL GSCE) French and Spanish: Students study the following topics, through class and coursework:
- Media and Culture Sport and leisure Travel and tourism Business, work and employment Out and about Customer service and transactions
Extra Curriculum activities, links and trips:
Trips are organised each year for Key Stage 3 and 4. Since 2008, we have been to Boulogne everyyear on a year 7 daytrip, Normandy on KS4 gite weekends and an Alicante KS4 Spanish trip. Trips happen every year so students can experience the language and culture in action. We are in the process of building links with a school we visited last year in Alicante.
There are MFL clubs on 3 days every week after school, to further motivate and encourage students. EAL students are also entered every year to gain a GCSE in their respective mother tongue; many different languages from Turkish to Russian.
