Greenwich has two School Sport Partnerships, which between them cover all the state schools in the Borough.
The schools in each Partnership are formed into "clusters" with each secondary school having a commitment to support a number of nearby primary schools. To provide this support each secondary school releases one of its PE staff from teaching duties for two days each week and this member of staff, the School Sport Co-ordinator (SSCo), liaises with a named teacher in each primary school with a responsibility for PE and school sport, this teacher is known as the Primary Link Teacher (PLT).
The School Sport Partnerships play a central role in supporting the Governments Physical Education, Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP) which is aimed at ensuring the delivery of a comprehensive national programme designed to enhance the take up of sporting opportunities by 5 to 16 year olds both within and outside of curriculum time.
The basic principles of the PESSYP strategy are to use high quality PE and sport and links with sports clubs in the community to:
Enable all young people, whatever their circumstances or ability, to take part in and enjoy PE and sport;
Promote young peoples health, safety and well being;
Enable all young people to improve and achieve in line with their age and potential.
In practice the intention is that young people will have increased participation in high quality PE, Out of School Hours Learning (OSHL) activities, informal physical activity, competition and community based sport. This will in turn promote whole school improvement and increased attainment in and through PE and sport.
By 2010/11 the Government want at least 80% of school children to participate in 3 hours high quality PE and sport each week within and beyond the curriculum.
