Welcome to The Eltham Foundation School’s Art department


Aims
We aim to ensure all pupils:
  • Explore the visual & tactile qualities of traditional & new media
  •  Understand meanings in work from different times & cultures 
  • Are able to reflect critically about their & others work 
  • Understand the relevance & importance of Art & Design in the outside world 
  • Are able to see Art & Design within the wider school curriculum 
Curriculum
Key Stage 3
  • In Year 7 & 8 Art is taught in rotation with other Expressive Arts subjects. Students are taught twice a week over a full term. 
  • Year 7 follow a scheme of work called “Introduce Yourself”. Students are introduced to self portraiture and clay 
  •  Year 8 follow a scheme of work based around “Objects & Meaning”. Students look at the formal elements of Art & Design & create a mixed media art work as a response.
  • In Year 9 students are taught once a week. Students are entered for a Btec Certificate in Art & Design. 
  • The Btec course is taught over the course of the year & students are encouraged to develop their skills & link to the world of work.

Key Stage 4

  • GCSE Art & Design Year 10 & 11 students follow the Edexcel Art & Design GCSE syllabus. Their major project in year 10 is “I Me Mine”. Year 11 students begin their final exam work in January & have 8 school weeks to complete. Their 10 hour exam is based around the creation of a work of art based on a theme which students have explored over this period.
  • They are taught twice a week and are encouraged to attend after school clubs to extend their coursework further.

GCSE Photography:
Year 10 students follow the AQA Lens and Light based media GCSE syllabus. They are taught twice a week and are encouraged to attend after school clubs to extend their coursework further. Students have access to traditional darkroom facilities as well as digital.

Staff:
The Art department at The Eltham Foundation School consists of enthusiastic members of staff with backgrounds within painting, photography, printmaking & sculpture & textiles.

Facilities:
We have 3 large dedicated classrooms Darkroom Kiln Computer Suite We are currently developing a website for the Art Department to promote independent learning & to celebrate the achievements of our students. More information will follow over the course of the Autumn term. 

 

Extra Curricular Activities:
We offer KS3 Art club on Monday evenings 3-5.

 KS4 students are encouraged to attend coursework catch up sessions on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to extend their coursework & expand their use of materials.

Community: 

 Over the last 2 years we have developed links with the local community, most successfully by taking part in Eltham Lights Up.

 Eltham Foundation School Art department worked with the Crafts Councils on a project called ‘Firing Up’ which linked us directly with Central St Martins School of Art, to enhance our ceramics provision. This year we will be running a workshop series alongside Pushkin House and the Russian Museum in Moscow. We will be running family learning activities over the course of the year.
